Reading

Intent

To provide a Curriculum which allows pupils to become confident, happy readers who develop a lifelong passion for reading and love of books.

We want our pupils to be able to transfer their reading skills to other subjects and be able to use them in all areas of life.

We always intend to provide a stimulating, exciting and challenging reading Curriculum for pupils of all abilities. Reading is the glue which holds our Curriculum together and we recognise this in all our classrooms.

Reading is our joy, our passion, bringing all our learning together.

Reading takes many forms and at St Mary’s we recognise this from the moment a child enters our school to the moment they move on and leave for their secondary school journey.

We wish to promote a love of books and allow everyone to experience to pleasure and knowledge reading can bring us.

Implementation

Our children will acquire the skills and knowledge to aid them in their journey to secondary schools and beyond. They will have read broadly, a range of authors and genres allowing them to be true readers; readers ready for a modern, ever-changing and diverse Britain.
Reading throughout the school:

  • Picture books
  • Audio books
  • Pictural audio books
  • Paired reading
  • Guided reading
  • Whole class reading
  • Individual reading
  • Teacher reading to the class

Reading leads up to understanding words, sentences, paragraphs, pages and books which have been read. We look to develop a child’s comprehension skills year on year, beginning with basic retrieval of information and leading up to complex inference and deduction skills, skills which children will need and use in their future lives.

Parents and carers play such an important part in the development of reading. Sharing books, talking about books, seeing adults reading and reading to each other develops a thirst and love for reading. Every child is expected to read every night at home. This will be different for Year groups and individual children.

We recognise that reading at home is so important, both the child reading to the adult or the adult reading to the child.

At the heart of reading lies understanding. We want all our children to comprehend what they have read, whether this be fiction or non-fiction.

Videos giving tips and advice on reading have been provided to further develop reading at home.

We always aim to ensure that every class visit Royston library annually and we recommend that children are taken to the library whenever possible with parents and carers to further foster the excitement of reading.

World book day, author and illustrator visits, book week, library visits are all events to help raise enjoyment and profile of reading.

Impact

Our children will acquire the skills and knowledge to aid them in their journey to secondary schools and beyond. They will have read broadly, a range of authors and genres allowing them to be true readers; readers ready for a modern, ever-changing and diverse Britain.

Children in Year 1 complete a Phonics assessment, the table bellows our Phonics results. Phonics are the building blocks for reading. They allow us to decode, blend and segment the individual sounds that make up words. Words then give the meaning behind the reading.
