INTENT

PE has an important role within the curriculum at St Mary’s supporting the children’s physical and mental needs. Throughout the school children can experience different sporting and physical activities enabling them to develop and build on skills, as they move through the school. Children develop their physical literacy by having the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding that enables them to take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.

We enjoy regular inter school competitions with other local schools as part of our Sports Partnership and we also participate in whole school activities such as Sports Day and regular PE lessons within their year groups.

IMPLEMENTATION

‘A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.’ Primary National Curriculum 2014

Staff deliver high quality PE lessons following the Complete PE scheme of work and have access to CPD training to support their teaching. Complete PE builds on the skills taught through team and individual sports and activities throughout the year groups, including dance, gymnastics, ball skills, teamwork, and athletics.

We are part of the North East Herts School Sports Partnership which enables the pupils to participate in local sporting festivals, events and inter school competitions allowing all children the opportunity to take part in a variety of new and exciting sports. We also receive specialist coaching through the SSP too.

We also have experienced coaches from Mash Multi Sports who deliver weekly breakfast and after school clubs, as well as engaging and fun PE lessons.

In KS2 all children attend regular swimming lessons to develop competency and skills in the water. The children also take part in Bikeability run by North Herts County Council allowing the children to become confident and safe riders when cycling on the road.

Physical activity does not stop at PE lessons as children are active throughout the day. This takes place through participation in the Daily Mile, 5-a-day Fitness, Wake & Shake activities, outdoor learning, Teach Active maths lessons and lunch and break times resourced with a variety of play equipment, with many of these activities taking place outside in the fresh air.

We currently receive the PE & Sport Premium Funding for schools from the government and details of how this is spent can be found under ‘Key Information.’

IMPACT

Physical Education supports the development of fine and gross motor skills and strengthens muscles. The development of fine motor skills can also support handwriting and the playing of musical instruments. It develops confidence, resilience, and teamwork skills and can reduce stress and anxiety in children.

Physical Education makes every child stronger and every life longer.
