History

Intent

At St Mary’s we promote History as a subject which brings meaning to our lives today and links to events of the past. We want children to develop a sense of History of local, national and global periods of time.

We want our children to recognise changes over time and look at which events impacted on certain periods of History.  We want our children to not just study History but to be true Historians and develop a strong historical knowledge and historical skills of enquiry.

Implementation

We follow the National Curriculum and create cross-curricular links where possible, especially in writing.  Our Curriculum is sequenced to provide the necessary skills and knowledge needed to progress as pupils move through the school.  The sticky knowledge covered at the end of each topic is assessed and opportunities to address misconceptions are implemented.

Impact

The children have a love of History and acquire a sound knowledge of all the History topics covered.  Children are able to use prior learning in their historical enquiry and studies.
